    SEND

    At Bishop Wordsworth’s School, we are committed to ensuring that all students, including those with SEND or medical conditions, have access to a rich and challenging curriculum, alongside co-curricular opportunities. Our aim is to help every student achieve their best, develop confidence, live fulfilling lives, and make a successful transition into adulthood, whether into employment, further or higher education, or training.

     

    Early Identification and Support

    All staff play a crucial role in identifying and supporting SEND. If a student’s needs arise or change during their time at BWS, their teacher will implement a programme of targeted interventions. Where additional support is needed, the SENDCo will assess the student and coordinate the most appropriate provision.

    We use a tiered system of support, aligned with statutory requirements, including Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) when necessary. Support may involve:

    • Individual or group interventions
    • Personal Learning Profiles
    • Exam Access Arrangements
    • Collaboration with external agencies such as the Local Authority, CAMHS and other specialists

    All plans are reviewed regularly to ensure they continue to meet the student’s needs and enable full participation in school life.

    Inclusive Teaching

    Adaptive and high-quality teaching is central to our approach, ensuring lessons are accessible to all learners. By tailoring teaching to support our most vulnerable students, we improve learning for everyone. There is more information on the Universal, Targeted & Specalist Support page.

    Partnership with Parents and Students

    We work closely with parents, students, and, where relevant, the Local Authority and external agencies. Regular communication, parent meetings, and pupil voice activities ensure that every child’s needs are understood and effectively supported.

    Applying to BWS with SEND

    Students with SEND who apply to BWS, whether through the 11+ or in-year entrance assessments, are supported throughout the process. Appropriate arrangements are made for exam environments based on documented needs. More information is available on the application process here.

    Depending on the level of need, students with SEND requirements who are offered a place at the school will be set up with specific transition arrangements to aid the move from their current school. These requirements are tailored to the individual needs of the pupils.
